About India

India, officially the Republic of India (Hindi: Bhārat Gaṇarājya), is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country by area, the second-most populous country with over 1.2 billion people, and the most populous democracy in the world.

India is a land of contrasts—from bustling cities to rolling farmlands, from multi-religious traditions to diverse landscapes. The country offers a vast array of wildlife, both flora and fauna, with differing habitats ranging from the Himalayan heights in the north to India’s long coastline on the south-western coast. A land where one can find dense forests, snow-capped mountains and picturesque waterways alike. An India that is vast, diverse and colourful. A country where a traveller can experience the unforgettable sights of an age-old civilisation that has been with us since the dawn of time.

About India in English

India is also a land with intricate cultural heritage, rich in diversity and adorned with varied cuisines from across its many regions. A land where one can get to know its people while experiencing their hospitality and traditions.

India is a land of ancient roots—a land filled with history, architecture and culture.

It is home to some of the oldest civilisations on earth: the Indus Valley civilisation, the Harappan civilisation, the Mauryan dynasty and the Gupta Empire. The country is also home to one of humanity's grandest monuments: the Great Wall of India, which illustrates an awe-inspiring feat in engineering as well as a monument that dates back more than 2,000 years.

In addition to its ancient legacy, India has a multitude of modern marvels that are changing this country forever.

Beneath the sub-zero temperatures, India’s capital city of New Delhi is experiencing rapid development with modern buildings going up everywhere. With a population of over 14 million people, the city is also home to one of the world's largest urban parks and has won many awards as a host city for major fairs and events.

The city’s skyline is dominated by tall buildings, with structures reaching up to 280m (890ft) high. There are also many smaller buildings and structures which, with the help of large cranes, suspend high above the city with amazing ease.

Possibly the most astonishing part of all is the fact that these high-rise structures have been constructed in an area of fewer than 50 acres (20ha). The rapid development has seen a huge increase in population over recent years and this has contributed to a rise in market prices for residential property.

A country where art, culture and history draw visitors from around the world. A country where people are creative, curious, spirited and always ready to mingle. India is also a country of diversity—an India that embraces its people and their myriad cultures while considering everyone an individual.

India is a country of vibrant cities and a country of ancient traditions. A country with many unique festivals, foods, colours and cuisines—an India that has been blessed with an abundance of attractions and treasures. Some of the most popular include Taj Mahal, Varanasi, Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple in Chennai, Prayag Ganga and Banasura's Palace in Ujjain. The country is also home to numerous monuments and heritage sites like the Gateway of India in Mumbai, Siddheshwar Mahadev Temple in Nasik, Khajuraho Temples (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), Konark Sun Temple (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) in Odisha etc.

A land where one can spend an evening or a day with friends and family, or a place where one can relax and unwind with a cup of coffee. A country that is creative, colourful, flavourful and truly irresistible!
